UPM Specialty Papers is responding to the growing pet food market’s need to transform traditional packaging solutions by offering paper-based alternatives for plastics and packages that contain soon to be phased out PFAS chemicals.

PFAS chemicals, also known as forever chemicals, are often used to achieve grease resistance that is an important requirement for pet food packaging. However, PFAS chemicals are harmful to health, and are therefore being phased out with regulation. For example, the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is expected to prohibit companies from bringing packaging products containing PFAS chemicals to the market.

“As PFAS chemicals are expected to be banned in the EU, UPM Specialty Papers can support converters and brand owners in this change. UPM’s barrier papers can achieve excellent grease resistance without the use of PFAS chemicals,” says Kalle Luomi, Senior Manager, Product Stewardship, UPM Specialty Papers.

Depending on customer requirements, the company offers a wide range of packaging papers for pet food packaging. One example is the UPM Asendo™ Pro barrier paper that combines recyclability and grease resistance with excellent print properties.

UPM Specialty Papers and partners in the packaging value network can also together co-create packaging solutions that help customers meet their goals such as food safety, recyclability, and other needs. For example, strength is also a necessary feature for pet food packaging that not only needs to endure logistics but also contents that weigh up to 20 kg.

“Great packaging protects what is being sold, but it also sells the product it protects,” Marco Tramontano, Sales Director, UPM Specialty Papers says. “People love their pets: they want to know that their best friend gets the same quality that they do. That’s why we are pleased to offer pet food brands food-safe packaging that also ensures the shelf appeal of their products – and reduces plastic.”

Demand for more greener packaging is aligning with innovation in industrial applications to future drive sales of specialty papers, according to the latest Smithers research.

Data from its new study – The Future of Specialty Papers to 2028 – show production of these engineered premium paper grades will reach 26.52 million tons in 2023, up from 24.23 million tons in 2018. Despite challenging economic conditions in several core markets, an overall positive growth trajectory is forecast by Smithers expert data modelling. Consumption of specialty papers is forecast to increase at a +2.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) across 2023-2028, adding an extra 2.97 million tons of demand, globally, over the five-year period.

The specialty paper market remains febrile, recent changes in paper sales patterns, in particular declining demand for office and printing grades, has seen several graphic paper assets retooled to make specialty grades. Modern papermaking innovations allow these to produce specialty grades on larger, more efficient paper machines, threatening the margins of smaller established specialist paper converters.

To accurately map the shifts in this diverse sector, the Smithers market analysis examines and quantifies demand across 43 distinct specialty paper segments.

The growth outlook is especially positive in the packaging segment. Single-use plastic legislation is combining with policies of brands owners and food-service business to introduce more sustainable, fiber-based products. This is leading to increased sales of flexible packaging and C1S grades, especially those with functional barrier coatings. Luxury brands are equally looking to adopt a greener profile in packaging, but without abandoning premium appearance or textures. This is stimulating sales of more decorative packaging papers and those optimized to carry high-quality printed graphics and decorative effects.

These factors will see packaging and CS1 grades account for nearly a third of the increased consumption Smithers forecasts for 2023-2028.

Smithers analysis detects similar increases for specialty labelstocks and paper release liners. With consumption increasing from 5.92 million tons to 6.54 million tons across 2023-2028. There are also positive signs of a recovery in demand for specialty printing papers, although this will largely be confined to thermal print compatible grades.

For many of the technical applications examined by Smithers, consumption of specialty papers will be determined by the broader economic outlook. With innovation and installations of new power generation, transport, and storage equipment bolstering demand for electrical insulation, cabling, and battery papers.

As markets complete their recovery from Covid-19 disruption, the relatively small industrial filtration segment is recovering strongly, with a +3.8% CAGR forecast to 2028. A post-pandemic recovery of vehicle sales is also fostering a revival in interest in automotive filtration papers.

Several segments are declining, however. Noticeably demand for currency and cheque papers will continue to be constrained by the increased popularity of electrical payments and bank transfers.

The Future of Specialty Papers to 2028 combines expert analysis with authoritative data forecasts for 43 different specialty grades:

  • Décor: Wallpaper, Coverings
  • Flexible packaging: Metallizing base, Waxing base, Laminating base, Machine-glazed, Greaseproof, Parchment, Twisting paper
  • C1S packaging
  • Printing labels: Labels, Specialty uncoated, Labels, Specialty C1S, Release liners
  • Printing: Cover latex saturated and non-latex, Photography, Thermal paper, Binders board, Fine art, Opaque lightweight
  • Filtration: Automotive/engine, Coffee, Tea, Industrial, Laboratory
  • Electrical: Insulation, Battery component, Cable
  • Security: Currency, Cheques, Tickets, Postage stamps
  • Others specialty: Glassine, Tracing, Synthetic, Cigarette, Creped decorative, Gift wrap.

This is segmented by geographic region and major end-use markets:

  • Western Europe: France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, Spain, UK, Other Western Europe
  • Eastern Europe: Russia, Poland, Other Eastern Europe
  • Middle East & Africa: Turkey, Other Middle East & Africa
  • North America: US, Other North America
  • South & Central America: Brazil, Other South & Central America
  • Asia-Pacific: China, India, Japan, Other Asia-Pacific.

Kadant Inc. recently announced the launch of the Upcycling™ reject handling line as an integral part of Kadant’s fiber processing offerings. Upcycling was established to provide innovative, cost-effective solutions for reject handling challenges commonly found in the manufacture of pulp and paper.

Kadant’s comprehensive Upcycling reject handling technologies provide advanced solutions for coarse reject handling, fine reject handling, and wastewater management. Innovation will be a focus of our Upcycling initiative, including the development of a thermoplastic system that will recover and process plastic waste as part of our comprehensive waste management solution.

“Our mission is to create zero waste solutions by redefining recycling and waste management,” said Marcello Giorgi, Upcycling managing director. “Our Upcycling systems turn waste to worth by generating valuable output from the reject stream.”

To identify waste challenges and improve financial performance at pulp and paper mills, a specialized Upcycling team conducts an audit that includes assessing waste disposal costs and environmental impacts. Upcycling experts then analyze the audit findings to provide a customized solution for transforming waste into valuable products such as metals, wire, and plastic pellets.

As part of Kadant’s Fiber Processing group, Upcycling is supported by over 150 years of fiber processing expertise. By expanding Fiberline products to include this innovative technology, Kadant’s global fiber processing customers benefit from a more complete circular paper economy and support for their sustainability initiatives.

Growing demand for education in the MENA region, and significant investments in the sector are driving growth in the stationery industry.

The UAE generated the highest market revenues for the stationery market in the Middle East in 2022, while South Africa led in the African markets.

Research released ahead of the 12 th edition of Paperworld Middle East, the largest international show for paper and stationery.

Dubai, UAE: The rising number of schools and universities in the Middle East and Africa has stimulated growth in the stationery market, according to a study conducted recently by 6WResearch. This upward industry trend is likely to be a significant topic of discussion at Paperworld Middle East which takes place from 21-23 November at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Commenting on the significance of the education sector boom, Syed Ali Akbar, Show Director for Paperworld Middle East and Gifts and Lifestyle Middle East said: “In 2022, the education sector accounted for 63.5% of stationery market revenue in the Middle East and Africa 1 and we have observed a correlation between the expansion of the education industry and growth in the stationery market. With increased government spending on education and rising investment from private firms across the region, the stationery market is expected to see continued growth.”

In October 2022, global investment house Safanad and international education platform Global School Management announced a joint plan to invest an initial US$200 million in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, leading to an immediate increase in student enrolment by 10,000. In addition, the UAE government has steadily increased budget allocation to education since 2020 and in South Africa, the basic education sector received a budget allocation of US$ 27.8 billion in 2022, up from 4.9% in the previous year.

Expenditure on education in the GCC region increased by an average of 13.3% this year, up from 13.1% in 2020. Saudi Arabia is expected to have the largest education market size between 2022 and 2027, with an estimated allocation of US$50 billion for the sector in 2023. Additionally, Kuwait and the UAE are projected to experience higher growth rates in student numbers compared to other Gulf countries.

According to the report, in 2022, stationery market revenue in the Middle East was US$6.4 billion, while in Africa the figure stood at US$4.34 billion. The UAE held the largest market share in Middle East stationery market revenues last year, accounting for 26.7% followed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and Kuwait. South Africa held a quarter of the market share in the African regions- mainly due to rising school enrolments – followed by Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and other regions. The report predicts that from 2023 to 2029, Middle East revenue will grow at a CAGR of 4.2% and in Africa, revenue is expected to rise at a CAGR of 3.6%.

Akbar concluded: “As distributors, retailers, wholesalers and franchise owners in the international stationery sector gear up for Paperworld Middle East, the latest figures bring a significant sense of optimism for the years ahead, particularly in the MENA region. Over the course of three days, the exhibition will share the latest market insights and industry opportunities among a global community of over 100 nations, setting the tone for the year ahead.”

Now in its 12 th year, Paperworld Middle East is the largest international trade show for paper, stationery, arts and crafts, office supplies and school products. Based in the central location of Dubai, Paperworld Middle East and its co-located show Gifts and Lifestyle Middle East are 50% larger than last year and expected to attract 10,000 visitors. The fastest-growing show of its kind in the world, Paperworld Middle East, will feature over 490 exhibitors from 40 countries.

Paperworld Middle East is a hub for distributors and retailers in search of everything from crafted stationery to the finest paper, along with office supplies and educational essentials. Show highlights include the Hub Forum where key figures from the E-commerce, digital and sustainable industries gather to discuss and debate the future of the paper, stationery, office supply and gift industry, and the inaugural Paperworld Middle East Awards which will celebrate excellence in the sector.
